1. What is the first movie that really made a strong impression on you? I remember the dragon bursting out of Gringotts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to be one of the coolest things I'd ever seen at the time, and the ending with Snape and the Pensieve was my first realization that I could like characters that could be both really good and really bad.
2. What are 3-4 of your favorite genres? Indie/Arthouse, Drama, Historical, Romantic Comedy
3. What are 3-4 of your LEAST favorite genres? Disney, Teen, Documentary
4. What are your five favorite films? La La Land, Rushmore, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, First Man, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
5. List three characteristics of what you consider to be a good movie. Unsatisfying/irresolute ending, realistic dialogue (rhythm and content, silence), subtle humor (isn't dwelled upon)
6. What are some (3-5) of your least favorite movies? Welcome to Marwen, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Talladega Nights
7. List three characteristics of what you consider to be a bad movie. Characters constantly receiving information to move plot along through text/on phone, really dramatically acted moments that don't fit the dialogue, too many camera cuts

14. Nominate a film for others to view for extra credit in our class. Rushmore (1998). This is a very offbeat movie full of absurd humor that, in the context of the characters and the relationships formed between the characters, fits in perfectly. There are so many little moments in the movie that make you stop and rewind a few seconds just to see them again and make sure you saw them right the first time; when you realize you did see them right, they get funnier and more ridiculous with each replay.

Jojo Rabbit  A Taika Waititi film This is the story of a little German Nazi boy who, without a father, creates a sort of imaginary friend/father-figure: Adolf Hitler. Not a run-to-the-theater-immediately! logline, if you ask me. In a TheEllenShow interview with Scarlett Johansson (the Nazi boy's mother), she bluntly told the audience that "the logline is not good and [she] can't pitch it. It sounds bad" -- Ellen sympathetically agreed. Johansson asked Ellen if she'd like to try, but received an immediate "no." Then, Ellen gave it her best shot: "it's a take on a bad situation." If Nazi Germany is only a "bad situation," then the state of the US right now is nothing more than a gentle sneeze. But I digress. FFS Movie #2: Isle of Dogs

Isle of Dogs is Wes Anderson's most recent movie (released in 2018) and fits into my theme of Rotten Tomatoes' highest rated movies directed by Wes Anderson (that I haven't already seen). I watched this movie second because it has a higher rating than Bottle Rocket, which I watched first, and a lower rating than The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I'll watch next. I wanted to see how each of these movies sized up against each other and if I could notice any qualities that would make it clear why one is considered "better" than another. I guess I'm saving the best for last, although I have so enjoyed the first two with the lower ratings. In essence, this movie is about a boy, Atari, going on a quest to find his dog. On a Japanese island called Megasaki ruled by this tyrannical mayor, all dogs are banished to "Trash Island" because of a dog-flu infecting the population. '80s, '90s, & Contemporary Film

1.  The '80s: a.  What are the "best" movies of the '80s? (according to where/who?) According to Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like most of the John Hughes movies are considered to be the best of the decade, like  The Breakfast Club,   Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Sixteen Candles.  Movies like Die Hard , The Terminator , Ghostbusters , and  Back to the Future are also high up on the list.  b.  What are the highest grossing, most "popular" movies of the '80s (according to where/who?) In terms of most popular, it seems like the Rotten Tomatoes list stays pretty much the same for this. Teen movies or romance movies like all of John Hughes', as well as  Say Anything,   Better Off Dead , The Goonies , Heathers, Dirty Dancing,  and  Stand By Me were and are pretty beloved.
